The Dubai conference cancels the speech of the former children’s hospital doctor who was investigated in the UK
A doctor who is being investigated for allegedly harming hundreds of children has been removed as a speaker at a health conference.
Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London has launched a rapid review of the care of 721 children who are thought to have received ineffective treatment from one of their leading orthopedic surgeons, Yaser Jabbar.
Jabbar was scheduled to speak at the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) International Orthopedic Conference in Dubai, where he currently lives and works, in July, but his attendance has been removed from the conference’s website. since news of the investigation emerged on Wednesday. Sunday.
Organizers told MailOnline: “On learning of the allegations made against Dr Jabbar, the organizers and committee of the MENA Orthopedic Congress decided to remove Dr Jabbar’s presentation from the programme, so Dr Jabbar is no longer part of the congressional speaker’s department.
Jabbar’s LinkedIn page says he is employed by orthopedic surgeons Orthocure in the UAE, but there is no mention of him on the company’s website.
Great Ormond Street Hospital said it had submitted an external review of its orthopedics service by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2022 “after concerns were raised by many of our families and staff”. The hospital has begun its examination of the 721 children who received care.
Of the 39 cases reviewed so far, 15 patients were unharmed, nine had “mild to moderate” pain and 13 were in “severe” ” which can involve lifelong injuries, the hospital said.
Lawyers representing the children’s families say the accident cases include botched surgeries, leg deformities, nerve injuries and single amputations.
Caroline Murgatroyd, of Hudgell Solicitors, said: “We have had a number of families come forward to seek advice and share their concerns since most of the inquests were published over the weekend.
“What is very shocking is the large number of children affected, and the fact that this is a world-renowned hospital, in which people had complete faith.
“Families put their full trust in the hospital and the surgeon to do the best for their children, which is completely understandable. They have many unanswered questions about how and why this happened. ”
He urged Great Ormond Street Hospital to submit a full report to the Royal College of Surgeons as soon as possible. Now, the hospital has said that it will provide a summary in December.
“[Families] having the right to be told the full story, and under the duty of free speech, is what we would expect the trust to do. As the report was completed last year, it should have been shared. We will definitely ask for it to be sent to all the customers who ordered us,” said Murgatroyd.
Jabbar is reported to be a physiotherapist but has not been licensed to practice medicine in the UK since January 8, according to the General Medical Council, which noted a number of reasons. which causes the doctor to give up their license, including retiring, moving abroad or deciding to pursue another career.
Jabbar has been approached for comment.
